Artist Profile: Miguel Angel Godoy…a study of movement
From portraits of Basquiat & Johnny Cash to abstract movements of a soul releasing itself into a new world of creativity, the artist Miguel Angel Godoy displays every angle and crisp movement of his character on each canvas he blesses. I met Miguel at a bboy jam and was taken by his character the moment I met this chap. Hailing from the Imperial Valley and raised an Amry Brat, Miguel’s artwork has become a staple in SanDiego and his unque style of movement takes it to another level. With the foundation of his works consisting of a barrage of movement that resides and releases from a spray can, it’s his spiritual connection to each piece which results in a physical connect with the viewer. His work pops from the walls of the gallery and allows one to experience the vibe he received from each subject. My first connection to his work was with a portrait that he created of 80′s Pop Artist Jean Michel Basquiat. The portrait consists of one of Basquiat’s more famous photgraphs of him sitting with a cat on his lap. The original photo, taken in black is created in a colorful, yet rustic vision that Godoy lays down and manipulates in a fashionable manner. Since coming in contact with the piece, I was not suprised by the overwhelming reception to it, as I myself have seen people react to it’s aura and the demand for prints of the work.
Over the past few years, I have witnessed a master in the making as Godoy has opened up his vision of movement and integrated it into movement of bodies and shape. Considered one of the Bboy’s Elite, “Get Busy Godoyski” has done just that…taken stagnant bodies of shape and brought life to their being. When I look at some of his new work, it makes me reconsider my current state and what I need to do to mimic his canvases on the dancefloor. Please enjoy the short video interview that was taken at the Thumprint Gallery this last summer at Godoy’s solo show, titled, Visions. Be on the lookout for new works and big projects coming up in the near future. Please visit his website to gain a better understanding of his work and to support his vision.
